tone trainer

Mandarin has four tones and a light “neutral” one. Same sound, different pitch, different word. Train your ear here: every sound is a real recording.

three tone changes

  • 3 + 3 → 2 + 3

Two third tones in a row: the first rises. 你好 is written nǐ hǎo but said ní hǎo. We write the original tones, as dictionaries do.

  • 不 before a 4th tone

不 bù becomes bú before a fourth tone: 不是 bú shì. We mark this change in sentences.

  • 一 changes too

一 yī becomes yí before a fourth tone (一个 yí gè) and yì before the others (一点儿 yìdiǎnr). Counting and dates keep yī. Marked in sentences.
