questions & answers
Is it really free?
Yes. Every day, every recording and both practice exams are free, with no sign-up and no ads.
How long does it take?
70 days of about 20 minutes: 58 days of new words and grammar, 10 review missions and 2 practice exams. Nothing is locked, so go faster or slower as you like.
Does it match the DELF A1 exam?
It follows level A1 of the Common European Framework, the level of the DELF A1 diploma: the A1 words of the FLELex list (graded from French textbooks) plus the everyday words a beginner needs, and the A1 grammar of the CEFR language inventory that France Éducation international links to. The DELF A1 has four papers, listening, reading, writing and speaking, each out of 25: you pass with 50 out of 100 and at least 5 in every paper. Our two practice exams copy that layout, with the multiple-choice listening and reading of the current format and self-checked writing and speaking. They are DELF-style practice, not official DELF material: check france-education-international.fr before you book.
How do French spelling and sounds work?
There is no extra reading line: the spelling is the reading, and every word has a recording. Three things help most, and the daily tips come back to them: many final letters are silent (petit, ils parlent); a silent final consonant is often sounded before a vowel, the liaison (les amis, vous avez); and the nasal vowels an, on, in and un are said through the nose. Accents matter too: é and è are different sounds, and où (where) is not ou (or).
Which French do you teach? Tu or vous?
Standard French of France, the French of the DELF. You meet both from day 1: vous with strangers, in shops and at work, tu with friends and family.
