Mimi says goodnight to the garden

A gentle bedtime story with a repeating rhyme. Read it slowly, and say “Wash, wash, yawn” together each time it comes round.

Mimi, a small grey cat with a lilac collar, sits on the back step at pink dusk, licking her white paw and yawning.

The sky turns soft and pink. Mimi sits on the back step and yawns a big yawn.

She licks her white paws clean. She licks her face clean too.

“Wash, wash, yawn. Goodnight, little garden,” Mimi says.

Mimi sits beside a patch of white daisies in the lawn as they fold their petals closed in the lilac evening.

Mimi pads down the stone path to the daisies in the grass.

The daisies are folding up their white petals. They close up every night, and open again in the morning.

“Goodnight, daisies,” whispers Mimi.

“Wash, wash, yawn. Goodnight, little garden,” she says softly.

Olu, a small snail with a yellow shell, smiles on top of a green watering can while sleepy Mimi washes her paw below.

On the green watering can sits Olu the snail. His shell shines in the moonlight.

“Goodnight, Olu,” says Mimi.

Olu waves his eye stalks. “I’m just setting off for my evening stroll! Snails like damp, mild nights,” he says.

Mimi gives her paw one more little wash. “Wash, wash, yawn. Goodnight, little garden,” she says.

Tiko the hedgehog peeps out of a log pile under the hedge, yawning, while Mimi tilts her head in surprise.

Under the leafy hedge is a log pile. Out pokes a little black nose. It is Tiko the hedgehog!

Tiko stretches and yawns. “Good morning, Mimi!”

Mimi blinks. “Good morning? But it’s bedtime!”

Tiko smiles. “Not for me. Hedgehogs sleep all day. My day is just beginning.”

The moonlit garden: closed daisies, Olu on the watering can, Tiko trotting on the grass, and sleepy Mimi smiling on the path.

Mimi smiles a sleepy smile. The daisies sleep at night. Olu and Tiko are busy at night.

Everyone has their own sleepy time. And Mimi’s sleepy time is now.

“Goodnight, Tiko,” she says.

“Wash, wash, yawn. Goodnight, little garden,” she whispers.

In the warm kitchen, Mimi turns round in her wicker basket with its lilac, yellow and green patchwork blanket by the stove.

Mimi pads back up the path. Push goes the cat flap, and she is home.

Her round basket waits by the warm stove. Mimi climbs in. “Wash, wash, yawn,” she purrs.

One turn. Two turns. Three turns. She curls up small and tucks her fluffy tail over her nose.

Mimi sleeps curled up in her basket by the warm stove, tail over her nose, with the calm garden outside the window.

The kitchen is warm and still. Outside, the daisies are closed up tight. Olu strolls, and Tiko snuffles in the grass.

Mimi’s eyes close slowly. “Wash, wash, yawn. Goodnight, little garden,” she whispers.

Goodnight, Mimi.

the end

let’s play: my sleepy steps

  1. Wash your hands and face, slowly, like Mimi.
  2. Say goodnight to someone you love.
  3. Turn round three times, slowly, then lie down.
  4. Close your eyes and whisper: “Wash, wash, yawn.”

for grown-ups

What this story helps with: A calm goodnight routine, done the same way each night, helps us feel safe and ready for sleep.

This story models a calm bedtime routine that happens the same way each night: washing, saying goodnight, going inside and settling down. Studies based on parents’ reports link a regular bedtime routine with young children falling asleep sooner and sleeping longer, though a routine is no guarantee. It also shares true bits of night-time nature: daisies close at night, and hedgehogs and garden snails are out and about after dark. Try building your own short routine together, with a rhyme your child can say at the end, and keep it the same each night.
