before you start

Our HSK 1 and HSK 2 courses: the course practises 300 focus words, picked from their 503, out loud from day 1. Sentences are read by your device’s Chinese voice: if you hear nothing, add a Chinese (Mandarin) voice in your system settings, or use Chrome or Edge. A microphone is optional: you can just speak, and if you record yourself the recording stays on this device.

questions & answers

Is it free?

Yes. Every lesson, the audio, the PDFs and both practice exams are free, with no sign-up and no ads.

How long does it take?

32 days of about 30 minutes (24 to 32, as each day’s page says): 24 speaking days, 5 mission days that bring each unit back in one story, a finale on day 30, and 2 practice exams. Pick a lighter or faster pace whenever you like.

Does it match the HSKK beginner exam?

It is practice for the HSKK beginner (初级) format and for everyday speaking at HSK 1–2: you repeat sentences you hear, answer spoken questions and talk about a question for a minute and a half, as in that test. Our practice exams copy its layout (15 + 10 + 2 items, about 17 minutes), but the questions are our own, and the points per part are our guess because they are not published. The HSK 3.0 system has announced no beginner speaking test yet, so check the test centre before you book. This is our own course, not material from the test makers.

Do I need HSK 1 and HSK 2 first?

Yes. The course teaches no new words: it gets you saying 300 focus words, picked from the 503 words of our HSK 1 and HSK 2 courses, out loud. If many of them are new to you, start with those courses.

What will I hear and read?

Simplified characters with Hanyu Pinyin, which you see after each try. Words are real recordings by native speakers where we have them; sentences use your device’s Chinese voice, so add a Chinese (Mandarin) voice in your settings if you hear none.

Do I need a microphone? Where do my recordings go?

No: you can just speak out loud. If you record yourself, the recording stays on your device; nothing is uploaded or sent to us.

Where is my progress saved?

Only in this browser, on this device. Nothing is sent to us, and clearing your browser data resets it.
