questions & answers
Is it really free?
Yes. Every day, every recording, every writing and speaking task and both practice exams are free, with no sign-up and no ads.
How long does it take?
74 days of about 25 minutes: 62 days of new words and grammar, 10 review missions and 2 practice exams. Nothing is locked, so go faster or slower as you like.
Does it match the Goethe-Zertifikat B1?
It follows the word list of the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 from the Goethe-Institut (about 2,400 entries counting the A1 and A2 words) and the usual B1 grammar: the simple past, the passive, relative clauses, Konjunktiv II, zu + infinitive and the two-part connectors. We teach about 1,200 of the new B1 words; a few the list also has (international words you already know, exotic animals, Swiss and Austrian variants) wait for B2. Our two practice exams copy the layout of the current Goethe-Zertifikat B1 for adults, with its four modules (reading, listening, writing, speaking), each scored out of 100 with a pass mark of 60. This is not official Goethe-Institut material: check goethe.de for the current exam before you book.
How do you train writing and speaking?
About one day in three, and every mission, ends with a task in the exam's own formats: an e-mail to a friend with your news and opinion, a forum post, a short formal e-mail, planning something with a partner, and a short presentation with pros, cons and your own experience. You write or record yourself, then compare with a model answer and tick a checklist. Nothing you write or say leaves your device.
Which German do you teach?
The standard German of Germany, as the Goethe list does, in the situations B1 is about: work, offices, the doctor, the news, opinions. Every noun comes with its article and its plural. Frau Weber still slips in an Austrian word now and then, and we say so when she does.
