questions & answers

Is it free?

Yes. Every lesson, the audio, the PDFs and both practice exams are free, with no sign-up and no ads.

How long does it take?

80 days of about 30 minutes: 65 learning days of up to 25 new words, 13 mission days with a story that reviews each unit, and 2 practice exams. Pick a lighter or faster pace whenever you like.

Does it match the HSK 5 exam?

It follows the new HSK 5 of the 2025 syllabus (HSK 3.0): all 1,599 words that are new at level 5 (小姐 is already in our HSK 1), all 70 level 5 grammar points, and practice exams in the new level 5 layout. It is our own course, not official HSK material, and the new exam’s pass marks are not published yet.

Do I need HSK 1–4 first?

Yes. It builds on our HSK 1, 2, 3 and 4 courses: their words, about 2,000, are known from day 1 and come back in every lesson. If many of them are new to you, start with HSK 4.

What will I read, write and hear?

Simplified characters with Hanyu Pinyin. Word cards show each word’s own tones; sentences show the spoken tone changes of 一 and 不. You practise writing the 150 characters of the official level 5 handwriting list. Most words play a native recording; words without one are read by your device’s voice.
