questions & answers

Is it free?

Yes. Every lesson, the audio and both practice exams are free, with no sign-up and no ads.

How long does it take?

142 days of about 30 minutes: 120 learning days, 20 mission days that bring each unit back in one story, and 2 practice exams. Go lighter or faster whenever you like.

What do I need to know first?

TOCFL Band B: the words of our Chinese TOCFL A and TOCFL B courses, about 4,500 in traditional characters. Every one of them can appear from day 1, so if a word looks unfamiliar, it is probably an earlier word worth looking up again.

Does it match the TOCFL Band C exam?

It teaches the vocabulary of TOCFL Level 5 (流利級, the C1 half of Band C) from the 2024-09-23 word list: 2666 new words, plus 43 everyday and grammar words the list leaves out (便當, 口罩, 照樣, 唯有…). The grammar follows the advanced Chinese grammar outline, adapted to Taiwan usage, and the practice exams copy the Band C layout: listening and reading, 50 questions each. The list has no Level 6 (C2) words, so Level 6 is not covered. It is our own course, not official TOCFL material.

Traditional characters and Taiwan Mandarin?

Yes: traditional characters as written in Taiwan (臺, 裡, 策畫, 煞車), Taiwan words (資訊, 簡報, 數位) and Taiwan readings (期 qí, 擊 jí, 質 zhí, 暫 zhàn, 血 xiě). Each word also knows its simplified form and we point out mainland differences as they come up.

Pinyin or zhuyin?

Pinyin (Hanyu Pinyin), the romanisation the TOCFL word list prints. Zhuyin (bopomofo) is not taught.

Can I practise writing?

Yes: 553 characters of Taiwan’s intermediate character list that TOCFL A and B did not have you write yet. Our stroke animations follow the mainland standard shapes; a few traditional characters are drawn a little differently in Taiwan.
