before you start

Our TOPIK 1, 2 and 3 courses, or about 3,500 words of Korean: you read Hangul with ease, switch between 해요, 합니다 and the plain -는다 style, and know level-3 grammar such as -어도, -도록, -다가, -느라고 and -는 대신에.

questions & answers

Is it really free?

Yes. Every day, the audio and the two practice exams are free, with no sign-up and no ads.

How long does it take?

122 days of about 30 minutes: 105 days of new words and grammar, fifteen review missions and two practice exams. The days stay open, so go at your own speed.

Does it match the TOPIK II exam?

It follows level 4. TOPIK II is one test for levels 3 to 6: listening (50 questions), writing (4 tasks) and reading (50 questions), 300 points, with level 4 from about 150 points. There is no separate level-4 paper, so the course ends with two practice exams in the TOPIK II layout, written with level 1–4 words and scored for level 4. Our list is level 4 of the National Institute of Korean Language’s standard curriculum (2,200 words, 67 grammar points), the reference list for Korean courses. This is not official TOPIK material: check topik.go.kr for the current format and pass marks before you book.

Do I need to do TOPIK 1, 2 and 3 first?

It builds on them: every level-1 to level-3 word and grammar point is used from day 1 without being taught again, and the same people are back for Anna’s third year in Seoul. If you already know about 3,500 words and the level-3 grammar, you can start here.

What is the romanisation under the words?

A reading help in the Revised Romanization of Korean, the official system in Korea, following how a word sounds. At this level we suggest switching it off and reading the Hangul: the exam has none.

Why do some texts use -으므로, -으며 or -고자?

They belong to written Korean: reports, notices, the news and essays. The course teaches them in those texts and keeps 해요 for talk, so you learn which style fits where, as the TOPIK II reading and writing parts expect.
